Silent Sparrow

Day 6:  I made this picture last winter with Lindsay on one of our day hikes in the Columbia River Gorge.  She is as at home in the forest as a wood sprite and has been unyielding in her pursuit to make a career out of her passion for the natural world.  This is a challenging endeavor but for the past several months she’s been successfully cutting a path for herself teaching science to 5th graders in the Oregon Coast Range and living in a volcano taking visitors on interpretive walks in the Newberry National Volcanic Monument.

When I decided to move to Oregon, one of the reasons I felt so comfortable about it was because I knew Lindsay would be here and that she would take care of me.  A naturally maternal person she brings warm savory treats and hand made hats with her wherever she goes.  She is an expert in what she has deemed “the womanly arts,” which includes gardening, crocheting, cooking, baking, sewing and making people feel at home with her.  And while she’s in between homes she comes and stays with me and Tom which is a truly a gift, not just because she bakes cookies and apple pies but because she is a spirit that you want to be near.

An absolutely fantastic shot. I feel as though I am intruding by looking at it, as though some magical spell has been broken by my arrival.
